First Motherhood Lessons

You have your little baby in your arms and you're ready to start your new life as a mom. Everything seems as perfect as it can be. Just look at those little fingers and toes! You made that little body and you should be proud of your accomplishment. Your baby is sleeping so peacefully. Being a mom is going to be wonderful. However, motherhood will not always have peaceful moments.

I remember the first tar diaper I changed. I hadn't changed a diaper in years and had just laid my baby girl down to change her. I took her diaper off, cleaned her(while gagging the entire time) and then left her bare bottom on my bed while I grabbed the clean diaper from behind me. My eyes were only off her for a second, but when I turned back around, she had pooped everywhere. My husband couldn't stop laughing. Didn't I know that babies poop whenever they want, even if they just got changed?

My oldest never spat up. I thought that I had the sweetest baby in the world, because I was never covered in spit up. One night, she threw up out of her nose and mouth. I was horrified and my mind went on a downward spiral. Did I eat something that made her sick? Did she get sick? I didn't know what to do. I called the doctor and he let me know that it was okay and to only worry if she kept throwing up.

You don't forget those first few lessons you learn as a mother. I can laugh at the tar diaper disaster now. Whenever I think back to the night my daughter threw up for the first time, I can't help but giggle at the milk coming out of her nose. You will have unexpected things happen to you every day. You will have times where you have no clue what to do.

The most important lesson you will learn as a mother is to stay calm during those moments. Your child is looking to you for reassurance and will remember you panicking. A mother is strong for her kids and herself. You are strong for yourself and your kids.
