Sunshine for a Rough Week: Vitamin D Deficiency Postpartum

The postpartum period can have a lot of rough weeks back to back. You'll be dealing with sleep deprivation, healing from labor and trying to understand this little baby you gave birth to. It is very hard on you emotionally and physically.

The greatest change you can make to improve your day is to get sunlight. The days that I have the curtains closed are the hardest: my kids have trouble sleeping at night, I am in a bad mood and we are all very crabby with each other.  Sunlight helps regulate your sleep cycle and improve your mood.

You can't get an adequate amount of sunlight through a window and it can be hard sometimes to get outside for that quality vitamin D. During winter, you have to spend a lot(hours and hours) of time in the sun to get enough vitamin D. This is why I give my kids vitamin D drops during the winter and I take extra vitamin D.

When I was developing the formula for my postpartum supplement, I asked several doctors what I should include in it. Universally, they all said that postpartum women are in desperate need of vitamin D. When I asked them how much, they responded with 2,000 to 5,000 IUs. That's 50 - 125 micrograms of vitamin D! Vitamin D deficiency causes fatigue, weakness and depression. Moms are already exhausted after having a baby, why not give them what they need the most?
