How to be positive in Motherhood

I went to a mom's night out recently where an amazing presentation was given on attitudes in motherhood. I learned a lot from other moms, but two things stood out to me. First off, the presenter talked about how moms bond over the bad things. If you say something like "I finished all of the dishes today" another mom would give you a less than enthusiastic response. If you say something like "my dishes are piled up so high, I'll never catch up", another mom would say "me too!" and you would bond over your problems.

It's really easy to notice the negative in motherhood. The work we do goes largely unnoticed, which can put you in the mindset of why bother. It's hard to work hard if you know that no one will appreciate it.  It's easy to look at muddy footprints after you mopped and get discouraged, but you don't have to let that turn into negativity. You mopped that floor and you should be proud of the work you did. We don't get upset when our kids get hungry a few hours after lunch, instead we make them dinner. Why should cleaning be any different? If you can be proud of a good dinner that you made, you can be proud of the floor you just mopped.

The second thing that stood out to me is that I have felt guilty for a long time about taking time for myself. I get away from the kids, but most of my alone time out of the house is spent running errands. I don't remember what I would do before I had kids. Where did I go when I was alone? I'm on a journey now to discover what I want to do without the kids. What does Samantha Wyatt want to do, not just what does mom want to do. It took me almost 5 years of motherhood to come to this realization and I would have benefited greatly from figuring this out sooner.

In all, the two mom tips I want to share with you today is that motherhood doesn't have to be negative and that mothers can be more than just moms. There will be hard days that will feel impossible to see in a positive light. We don't have to let that negativity define our motherhood. You are more than just a mom. You can enjoy time to yourself. As you get that time for you, you will be able to see more of the positives in motherhood.
